What does a foot care nurse do?

Foot Care Nurses provide essential services. They often help diabetics and our older population with foot complications. They enjoy flexible hours and work in various heath care settings, including:

  • hospitals
  • long-term care homes
  • assisted living communities

Many foot care nurses run their own foot care practice. Some work with other foot care nurses.

What to expect

This course offers comprehensive theory and practical instruction and supervision. You learn about:

  • the structure and function of the human footHands holding a foot and toes to inspect foot health.
  • abnormal conditions
  • high-risk feet, for example clients with diabetes
  • infection prevention and control
  • business basics
  • podiatry tools and equipment
  • medical terminology
  • holistic approach to foot care
  • techniques to improve or manage foot and nail conditions
  • overview of foot care within the scope of nursing practice

This course takes place over 4 weekends and includes a two-day clinical skills component. The 14-hour clinical portion gives you a chance to apply what you learned in the theory component and practice on feet under the supervision of an experienced foot care nurse.

Who can take this course?

This course is open to Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses. You must bring proof of current active registration on the first day of class.

Clinical Skills equipment and supplies: Approximately $500 (to be ordered after first day of class).
Equipment and supplies list: Ingrown clippers, curved clippers, straight clippers, diamond files (fine, medium and coarse), callus file, N95 masks, rotary tool.
